An expanded fit bushing is a precision-engineered sleeve cold-worked directly into a damaged or out-of-tolerance fastener hole in an aircraft airframe component. Unlike shrink-fit bushings that rely on temperature differentials for installation, expanded fit bushings are mechanically pressed into place, simultaneously restoring the hole to its original fastener geometry and introducing compressive residual stress into the surrounding metal. That residual stress suppresses fatigue crack growth — extending the structural life of the repair well beyond the original condition of the hole.
